Here are some of my absolute favourites to follow on YouTube for the latest on what’s happening Hungarian politics. If you can recommend others please let me know. You can also find how to support each channel on their YouTube as they need all the support they can get to keep doing their work.
I’m on the hunt for more English-language analysts as well so I’ll keep this article updated.
Róbert Puzsér
In my eyes, Puszér is the OG of commentators in Hungary. You might find him off-putting because it sounds like he’s yelling non-stop, but I find his analysis on Hungarian topics to be on point. When I wake up and a lot of content has been posted overnight, I’ll definitely listen to Puzsér first.
He regularly on a show called Önkényes Mérvadó and he’s often invited on panel discussions that are published on YouTube as well. He did a famous Hard Talk interview with Péter Magyar in early 2024 which has 2.5 million views.
Follow him on YouTube here.
Háromharmad podcast
Another great way to stay informed is the weekly Haromharmad podcast. The name is a play on Fidesz’s 2/3s majority in the parliament because the podcast name translates to 3/3s.
Magyar Hang
Magyar Hang’s YouTube channel has lots of great content. The Kotottfogas podcast is more with some golden oldies and lots of different point of views, but it’s also one a listen to regularly. Then you have Flaszter and Komporszag with interesting interviews and analysis.
Partizán
Partizán is a YouTube channel that does really good interviews and documentaries on Hungarian politics and other matters of society. Péter Magyar did his famous first interview on Partizán, so the channel is central to his whole genesis. A political activist called Márton Gulyás does a lot of their flagship interviews. I also love the weekly show “Veto” with the political analyst Balint Ruff.
Follow Partizan here.
Telex
Telex is a news channel similar to Partizan in a way with lots of great interviews and documentaries. It also did an iconic early interview with Péter Magyar when he first started out. There’s a journalist called Tamás Fábián who does a lot of their big interviews who’s worth looking out for.
Önkényes Mérvadó
There is a show called “Önkényes Mérvadó” which was a radio show on Spirit FM that brought together Róbert Puzsér and many others to discuss and debate the news of the day. This show was probably the first that I started listening to for analysis on what was happening with Péter Magyar. Every morning I’d listen to it on the way in to work. Anyway, the people behind the show parted ways with Spirit FM and started up again on their own channel called Szélsőközép, so you can continue listing here and listen to the old stuff here.
Kontroll
Kontroll.hu is a new media venture actually founded by Péter Magyar’s brother Marton Magyar, which I only connected the dots on recently.
Without knowing that link, I already liked shows like “Keri Kerdi” with the political analyst Laszlo Keri and the Szabadsajto Klub panel discussion on Kontroll’s YouTube channel.
HetiVálasz podcast
HetiValasz is an interview podcast by Valasz Online. It’s not always about politics but when it is, I’ll always listen.
Egyenes Beszéd | ATV
“Egyenes Beszed” is actually a nightly news program on the ATV TV channel, but you can also watch it on YouTube. They follow the day-to-day news closely so it’s a way to stay on top of things as they happen. It has two hosts one of which is Egon Ronai. Péter and Egon have a rocky relationship…it was this show that MP walked off mid-interview but generally speaking I find Egon and the other host György Szöllősi to be fair.
Törökülés podcast | 24.hu
I’m not sure if this podcast is going to stick around long-term as it’s just started but “Torokules” hosted by political analyst Gabor Torok could be an interesting one if it hangs on.
Direkt36
Direkt36 is an investigative news portal. They have recently released a documentary called “The Dynasty” investingating the Orbán family’s corruption.
Atlatszo
Atlatszo is another investigative news portal that is worth following and supporting.
Gulyáságyú Média
Gulyáságyú Média is a fledgling independent media organisation that is no frills but that does some cool interviews and content around Hungarian politics. Definitely worth a subscribe on YouTube.
Ötpontban
Szabolcs Dull is a very well regarded journalist in Hungary. He was the editor-in-chief of Index.hu when he was fired which was followed by a mass exodus of journos leaving and founding Telex.hu alongside him.
Currently, his main endeavour is the Ötpontban podcast and substack. “Ötpontban” refers to his analysis of political topics which he tends to do in five points. Follow him on Facebook to read his regular five-point analyses.
HVG 360
I really like the HVG 360 news site for its in depth journalism.
Innen és Túl
Innen és Túl (“From here and beyond”) is a fun little podcast hosted by Szabolcs Dull (see Ötpontban above) and Samu Seres who is a young content creator and TikToker. It’s cool to have the two different age groups joining forces to discuss the politics of the day. Subscribe on YouTube.
Klubrádió
New interviews with analysts and commentators are uploaded regularly to their YouTube. Plus they have a zebra in their logo, which is fortuitous given the prominent role of zebras in this election.
Others:
- László Kéri has a sweet old grandpa voice, but don’t let that deceive you, he has a long history in Hungarian politics. He often talks about being invited all over the country to speak about Péter Magyar’s rise and this has given him a second lease on life. He doesn’t have a channel per se but if there’s an interview with him I’ll always give it a listen.
