  • 9 January: The investigation into Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi having a holstered gun at an event last year is resolved and the gun is returned to him. (Ruszin-Szendi had permission to carry the weapon but after Fidesz made an issue out of it the police had confiscated it pending an investigation)
  • 10 January: Fidesz holds a campaign event to announce their candidates and their campaign slogan “Biztos választás” — “A reliable choice”. The only problem is they forgot to register the domain name and so Tisza did it for them: biztosvalasztas.hu where Tisza is instead promoting itself. Rookie mistake. To make hay of the situation, Tisza then said it would register the name so that Fidesz would need to pay them to use the slogan, and they offered to sell the domain to Fidesz with the money going to Tisza’s own campaign. It is alleged that this campaign blunder is increasing tensions within Fidesz about the suitability of their campaign director Balazs Orban.
  • Fidesz swaps out approximately 40 of their candidates…in past elections they have swapped out approximately 20 of their candidates

  • 13 January: Additional evidence is revealed that the government did in fact know that there were underage victims of abuse at the Szőlő Street Reformatory by the director Péter Pál Juhász, yet they kept him in place as director.
  • 17 January: Tisza makes a huge announcement with Istvan Kapitany (a former second-in-charge at Shell) joining the party as an advisor on economy and energy. Interview here.
  • 20 January: The government announces it will shut down the Szőlő Street Reformatory.

February

  • 2 February: Today marks the 2-year anniversary of the clemency scandal whereby the President and Justice Minister resigned for giving clemency to someone who protect a pedophile. It also kicked off the rise of Peter Magyar and the Tisza Party.
  • 3 February: A new independent poll released shows Tisza leads Fidesz by 16%.
  • 3 February: Fidesz supporter János Kovács releases a video talking about how Magyar should be beheaded. It was reshared by a Fidesz aligned Roma group, CiKöSz. He also threatened those people who showed Tisza Party deputy Mark Radnai through the area.
